Community-led Peacebuilding and the Protection of Harvest

2024 South Darfur Harvest Report

Since the war broke out in Sudan April 2023 there have been widespread food shortages and famines. Those few people who planted crops were displaced, and the traditional ‘talaga’ systems — agreements negotiated between farmers and herders for cattle migration — broke down.

However, the 2024 agricultural season in South Darfur marked a remarkable recovery, with harvests reaching 70-95% of pre-war levels across 14 localities where Concordis supports peacebuilding. There will be no famine in South Darfur this year as a result.

Concordis trained and facilitated Advisory Groups to mediate conflicts and stabilise agricultural production. Advisory Groups are made up of trusted people from every community. They generate early warnings of conflicts arising, and intervene quickly before violence escalated. They also facilitate negotiations between farmers and herders, ensuring grazing routes are respected.
