Often overlooked in the broader narrative of Sudan, Abyei is a microcosm of the region’s complex challenges. This contested territory, covering 10,546 square kilometers is roughly the size of Lebanon. Its people have endured decades of conflict, displacement and underdevelopment. Its strategic location at the crossroads of Sudan and South Sudan makes it a vital, yet fragile link between two nations. With rich agricultural potential, Abyei should be a source of prosperity, but instead, it remains a battleground for competing interests.

Concordis recognises the urgent need for peacebuilding in this volatile region. Our work is rooted in the belief that Abyei’s potential can be realised through collaboration, resilience, and the empowerment of its communities.

Building on a Decade of Peacebuilding

Concordis’ deep roots in Abyei and the wider region provide a solid foundation for our continued work. Over a decade of engagement has yielded invaluable insights and trusted relationships. Our program aims to solidify these achievements by:

  • Strengthening Local Peace Structures: Supporting traditional governance systems and conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure they are inclusive and effective

  • Building Community Resilience: Empowering communities to withstand shocks like conflict and climate change through economic development and conflict prevention strategies

  • Advancing the Abyei Issue Nationally and Internationally: Linking local perspectives to national-level discussions on Abyei's status to create sustainable solutions

By working closely with the Misseriya, Ngok Dinka, Twic Dinka, and Nuer communities, we continuously adapt our approach to reflect evolving needs and challenges. Our goal is to create a lasting peace that benefits all residents of Abyei.
