The Central African Republic’s southwest has become increasingly contested due to competition over natural resources. It is rich in deposits of gold and diamonds, which complicates the historical trust and symbiotic relationships between farmers, livestock herders, and artisanal miners. This report carries out empirical analysis and highlights the role of weak land governance in exacerbating the effects of environmental change and resource scarcity, which in turn lead to conflict.

This report examines the current role of Abyei’s women and youth in the Abyei Administrative Area and highlights how they might practically become more involved in promoting sustainable peace. Women have little representation in leadership and are seen as informal peace builders, while youths are viewed as protectors and security providers despite opposition to their militarization. Increased representation for these groups could improve access to justice, economic opportunities, and communication.

Conflicts between livestock herders, farmers, and miners stem from competition for land use. Competition for land use has increased the militarisation of these areas, increasing the risk of conflict. The field research team concludes that the diversification of livelihoods and increased trade amongst these parties are crucial to peacebuilding in the area.

92% of the Central African Republic’s territory is composed of savannah drylands, making seasonal mobility like transhumance in herding and shifting agriculture especially important. Decades of conflict have disrupted the historical trust between herders and farmers, causing issues. This report details the points of contention and recommends pathways to peace based on re-establishing profitable interactions and enabling the community-led formulation of new - local - ‘rules of the game.’

Report on the accessibility of goods at markets in South Sudan and highlights products that consumers found difficult or impossible to obtain. In particular, fruits, vegetables, grains, and pulses, are undersupplied in all three states surveyed. The report draws attention to issues like transportation of goods and currency exchanges hindering these markets before making recommendations to address these.

A group of Kenyan policy-makers and influencers of policy, representing a range of ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds, met in Nairobi under the auspices of the Institute for the Study of African Realities, the Sychar Centre and Concordis International, to reflect on the issue of land grievances in Kenya. With the benefit of insight from four expert speakers, extensive discussion allowed the participants to seek proposals to help resolve the conflict between differing viewpoints, and its negative effects on Kenyan society.
