Advocates and Protectors: The role of Abyei’s women and youth in managing conflict and promoting sustainable peace

This report examines the current role of Abyei’s women and youth in the Abyei Administrative Area and highlights how they might practically become more involved in promoting sustainable peace. Women have little representation in leadership and are seen as informal peacebuilders, while youths are viewed as protectors and security providers despite opposition to their militarization. Increased representation for these groups could improve access to justice, economic opportunities, and communication.
