Land reform remains a deeply emotive issue in Kenya, with significant differences between the stated and perceived objectives of the National Land Policy. Concordis sponsored a conference where heads of local communities heard from experts and debated the issues amongst themselves to arrive at recommendations to help improve the situation.

Before the succession of the Republic of South Sudan from Sudan, nomadic communities used to freely move into South Sudan in Melut County with their cattle without restriction, and they enjoyed good relationships with the host communities. However, since independence, relationships have deteriorated. This conference brought together members of the different communities to better understand the reasons for conflict and secure an agreement to help prevent it.

This is a report of a Cross–Border Migration Conference held at Melut County Hall in Upper Nile State from 19 to 21 June 2012, organized by Concordis International and funded by the European Union. The conference brought together the Fellata and Arabs pastoralists with the host communities of Melut County to discuss and agree on policies for the migration of pastoralists in the county.

Upper Nile State Migration Conference held at the South Sudan Hotel, Malakal, South Sudan on 24 to 25 February 2012

Discussion of policies for the migration of pastoralists into the Upper Nile, including a plan for communication and cooperation to help secure migration agreements. Organised to promote peaceful co-existence between pastoralists and local indigenous populations during the seasonal migration of pastoralists.

Summaries of a workshop aimed at providing guiding principles, technical knowledge, and practical experiences in border management to facilitate cross-border cooperation, economic relations, pastoralism, movement of peoples and social interaction, and border security.

This conference featured Kenyans from a range of different groups and backgrounds. They reflected on the different conceptions of Ethnicity and Nationhood in Kenya, tensions between these two concepts and recommendations for how these could be addressed going forward.

This report examines drivers of conflict in the North- South border areas of Sudan and current initiatives aimed at managing them. The contents derive from desk and field research undertaken in mid-2010. The document is also informed by the views and concerns expressed by participants at workshops in seven locations along the North-South border and at a senior level workshop in Khartoum.

Summary of conferences discussing the role of theology in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict drawing on the perspectives of both sides to try to find areas of agreement with a view to having leaders of these groups play a greater role in resolving this conflict.

The violence following Kenya’s 2007 general election spread quickly across parts of the country and partly may be attributed to land issues. Several sources attribute sub-optimal use of land and the spiritual, cultural, and religious values attributed to it as barriers to peace and development.
